When a West Coast oil refinery wanted someone to manage their turnaround stud needs, they had high hopes for cost savings and extra time on task.
They got both. By the end of the project, total cost savings were estimated at $447,000. Fastenal made this possible by temporarily putting a stud cutting saw, chamfer, and stamping machine on-site with raw bar. This location was staffed 24/7 to cut emergency change orders and non-standard stud needs, which were all delivered in under two hours. No time to spare Because turnarounds cannot afford to wait, Fastenal’s staff made hourly rounds. They stocked and replenished all standard studs in the refinery at multiple points of use. This allowed for easy accessibility for refinery workers. To ensure inventory was always available, all standard studs were also stocked at Fastenal’s local branch, and then that inventory was backed up by a third safety net in the form of Fastenal’s regional distribution center in the state. When a stock out isn’t acceptable, build a situation where it can’t happen. Why this works
Every turnaround is different, but Fastenal’s local presence paired with the ability to stock inventory close to the work removes common roadblocks. When inventory isn’t in doubt, you can turn to the on-site saw service to speed up the overall project. Add in that Fastenal has its own proprietary trucking system and you’re left with a partner for turnaround who’s able to provide same-day delivery/service. Next steps
