The 4 non-negotiables of hand tools

A good hand tool is more than a means to an end. It is an extension of the tradesman using it and can completely change the outcome of the task or a project. Unfortunately though, there are a lot of hand tools on the market that overpromise & under deliver. To help sift through the clutter, here’s a checklist of 4 non-negotiables to keep in mind before you make your next hand tool purchase.

  1. PURPOSE. First and foremost, what is the intended purpose of the tool? While a multi-purpose, 8-in-1, “jack-of-all-trades” tool sounds appealing, remember the golden rule: right tool for the right job. You want a tool that is going to function as advertised, every time. While many other tools may be able to get the task at hand done, using the correct tool will save you time & headaches down the line. Take this long nose pliers set for example – while any traditional long nose might be able to get the job done, having a specially designed tool to remove spark plugs or access hard to reach places with an angled nose will help you complete the job with greater ease. If the purpose isn’t clear, it’s best to skip.
  2. ACCURACY. The accuracy of a tool is equal parts defined purpose & high-quality materials. Tools that allow users to flawlessly execute their job are worth their weight in gold, no matter the trade. There are even certain industries and jobs that require perfection where faulty or inadequate tools are simply unacceptable. Manufacturers with a deep commitment to quality produce a large assortment of tools dedicated to accuracy, especially those offering precision pliers. Precision pliers are specialized hand tools designed for fine work on small parts. What makes a stand-out precision pliers? Look for sharp cutting edges, low-friction movement, and specialized tips.
  3. EFFICIENCY.  Time is money and the quest to complete tasks faster is never-ending. How does this apply to hand tools? Invest in tools that allow you to work smarter, not harder. For example, need to cut a lot of screws? Find a tool that features threadless screw cutting. Don’t have an extra set of hands? Grab a pair of locking water pump pliers that lock onto the workpiece. Tired of searching through your bag for the right size open ended wrench? Replace your full-set with just one tool. Make these swaps in your tool bag to become more efficient, savvy and competent.
  4. COMFORT. Tasks are often repeated several times a day and you need a tool that reduces fatigue, not increase it. Two things can very directly help with this: handle style and comfort-forward features. Many tool manufactures offer various handle styles to match the preferences and needs of the end-user. Whether you want a slim, smooth handle or a wider, textured grip, you can find & invest in what feels best for you.  Additionally, some tool manufacturers incorporate features that are specifically designed to combat repetitive tasks – like spring loaded cutters – so users can tackle those laborious tasks with ease. Regardless of your preference, the expectation should be less fatigue, no slippage and no break-in period. Your comfort should not be up for negotiation so find a tool that supports that.

While filling your tool bag is ultimately determined by what tools you need for your job & your budget, these four non-negotiables will serve as guardrails to ensure you are using quality tools that help you master your craft.
