The challenge: Fight stockouts while maintaining balanced inventoryUTLX knows a thing or two about big projects. Considering they work on railcars you could say all their projects are big. But regardless of scale, a business can’t afford downtime. So, they turned to RFID bins to get a handle on inventory.
“We have it in paint, mechanical, everywhere, just to establish not having to have the human error of ordering something,” said Jon Condos, EHS manager at UTLX’s facility in Evanston, WY. “It is just done for you automatically and it is working very, very well." With that system working nicely, Condos asked for more. He wanted a system that could handle large inventory items with the same ease. Together, a “safety locker” was customized for UTLX.
“So, the safety locker is a state-of-the-art locker unit that we did in Evanston. I worked very closely with Fastenal, the team that we have here. And basically, what we did with it is we put high ticket items in it – lanyards, harnesses, welding hoods – things that people need, but also items that I don't want to forget to order for somebody.” "From my standpoint, we have actually adjusted very well … I mean, it has been a flawless transition in all of our shops with everybody on board with it, too." -- Jon Condos, EHS Manager for UTLX
