The price of MRO afterthoughts

Woman in manufacturing facility
Maintaining a well-functioning a facility takes a proverbial village of planners, purchasers, and personnel that all contribute to the unique operational goals that ultimately keep the lights on and the finance department happy.  The true unsung hero in the MRO landscape are readily available supplies, especially those that are often afterthoughts (like tapes).  Without the right tape, you are vulnerable to offline equipment, unsafe facilities, and production delays that can lead to reduced daily outputs, wasted labor hours, and the much dreaded “tape” emergencies.

Much like the “good for anything and everything” roll of duct tape in your garage or junk drawer, industrial tapes are a staple of any supply room, maintenance inventory, or production supply bill of materials.  Tapes are critical to identifying key areas of a facility when they are used to hang signage or increase visibility to hazardous areas. Production operations require millions of rolls of tape to make chips and printed circuit boards and ensure painted products look professional after their standard power coat or other industrial painting process is completed. Having tape on hand keeps your outputs moving out the door.

Being prepared is essential for the industrial sector given the state of the global supply chain. The pandemic is waning for the most part, pricing doesn’t feel so volatile, but raw material supply constraints have the potential to touch virtually every industry, given tape is used in some capacity to manufacture just about everything.

Planning can be hard if you don’t start small.  I suggest starting with the basics, and then expanding into your unique needs.  Segment your supplies by department and tackle one grouping at a time. Give supply list examples to team leaders to build upon and identify consolidation opportunities to leverage bulk purchases and reduce spend.  Leaning on a partner like Fastenal to manage your inventory is a priceless investment.
