Let’s face it – when it comes to choosing the right degreaser for your facility, there are a lot of options. Almost too many options: solvent-based, water-based, and more! The type of degreaser you use depends on the type of grease you are trying to tackle, the surface, safety concerns, and more. More and more, facility managers are looking for safer alternatives that are safer for the environment and employees, and also deliver on efficacy.
Different types of degreasers for different types of needTo effectively remove grease, you need the right degreaser. There are different types of degreasers to consider:
Solvent-Based: Solvent-based degreasers, includes commonly known butyl solvent, are known for their strong cleaning power and their ability to effectively dissolve and remove heavy grease, oil, and stubborn stains from surfaces. They work relatively quickly, reducing the amount of time and effort required for cleaning. Some solvent containing products may also contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can contribute to air pollution, and negative health effects. Some solvents have a flashpoint, which can be a fire hazard. Solvent-based degreasers use solvents, like acetone and toluene and trichloroethylene (TCE), as their key ingredient. Milder solvent cleaners can use isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and glycerin. Often, stronger solvents are used in industrial environments to remove thick accumulations of grease, oil, and grime. Milder solvents are often used to clean or treat rubber, metal, concrete, and other compounds. Many regions have strict regulations regarding the use and disposal of solvent-based degreasers due to their environmental and health. Disposal alone can be costly. They are often flammable, emit VOCs, contribute to air pollution, and have a strong odor. Prolonged or repeated exposure can also lead to respiratory and skin issues. Water-Based: Water-based degreasers use water as a base ingredient and include, surfactants, builders, emulsifiers, saponifiers, chelating agents, and other cleaning ingredients to enhance cleaning performance. Water-based degreasers do not contain solvents.
They are generally considered more environmentally friendly because they do not contain VOCs, have reduced odors, and are non-flammable. Users are less likely to experience skin irritation, respiratory issues, or other health concerns. Water-based degreasers are generally milder than solvent-based degreasers and may not be as effective at removing heavy grease and oil buildup. Choosing the right degreaser is essential for maintaining a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible facility.
